Use the correct format for insurer membership numbers

It’s essential to have the correct membership policy number for insured patients so you can get pre-authorisation for treatment and invoice their insurer. You can use our Find Member service to check membership details for Aviva, AXA Health, Bupa, Cigna International, Trust in Health, and Vitality.

It also helps to know the membership number format for the other insurers that recognise your practice. That way, you can see something doesn’t look right straight away and check this with the patient.

Membership formats recognised by different insurers

  1. Alliance Health – Three possible formats of six, seven or eight numbers
  2. Allianz Partners – Letter P followed by between four to nine numbers
  3. Allianz are also processing Aetna’s American policy holders. Our guide sets out the eight possible alphanumeric formats which all start with the letter W
  4. Bupa Global – Single format of BI, followed by hyphen, four numbers, hyphen, four numbers, hyphen, four numbers
  5. WPA (available on Find Member shortly) – Five possible formats of between five to nine numbers
